Republicans are closely monitoring abortion tonight with an eye toward the House, Senate, and White House.

from Jeff Zeleny of CNN

The results of tonight's elections in Virginia and Ohio will be closely watched by Republican presidential candidates and party leaders, who want to see if the GOP will still face political challenges on the abortion issue in the 2024 election cycle.

Republicans are hoping that the political minefield that abortion created in the 2022 midterm election cycle has diminished, but that is by no means a given.

For instance, former governor Nikki Haley has attempted to strike a somewhat moderate position on abortion. Similarly, Donald Trump has purposefully avoided discussing abortion, telling advisors and supporters that he believes it will be a political liability for the party.

From a 30,000-foot perspective, the importance of abortion is central to the thoughts of almost all Republican strategists as they attempt to take control of the Senate, maintain their slim majority in the House, and win the White House this evening.
